Scent, Beauty, Life With Lavender: Fort Hill Farms & Gardens

Fort Hill Farms & Gardens in Thompson, Connecticut, will be celebrating lavender in all forms over the third weekend in June.

Home to one of New England’s largest lavender gardens, the farm has a weekend planned with lavender-centered activities and other family-friendly activities.

“Our gardens have more 1,500 organic lavender plants that will be in full bloom over the festival weekend,” says Kristin Orr, co-owner of Fort Hill Farms. “Anyone looking for a relaxing and intoxicating daytrip will enjoy strolling through the gardens. Lavender has been enjoyed for centuries for its fragrance, as well as its medicinal benefits and, more recently, for its culinary applications.”

Orr chose to cultivate lavender at Fort Hill Farms because she wished to grow a plant that was completely organic, unusual, edible and sustainable. While lavender is one of the world’s most popular fragrances, it is also one of the most difficult plants to grow. To thrive, the plant needs ample drainage within a protected, enclosed environment. A 12-foot high foundation wall from the farm’s original cow barn extends over 350 feet and provided Orr with the perfect area for the lavender to thrive.

Admission is free to stroll the gardens, however a number of other activities will also take place over the weekend including:

June 18, Paula Goldman herbal wisdom workshop. Pre-registration is required; cost is $35. To register email lavender@forthillfarms.com.

June 18, 19, free educational walking tour. Learn about the history of lavender and indulge in its natural aromatherapy. See how lavender can be used for various medicinal and culinary applications.

In addition to the scheduled events, there will be pick-your-own lavender specials both days and the farm’s gift shop and creamery offer lavender items, made from last year’s harvest. Additionally, the farm’s creamery will be serving a special “Quintessential Dessert” made with The Farmer’s Cow ice cream, made with milk and cream from the farm, combined with lavender topping and a lavender cookie.
