Chocolate milk does not come from brown cows, as my father jokingly pointed out long ago on family excursions around Connecticut.

More than 40 years ago, dairy farms were a common sight out the window of our station wagon. Not any more.

Previously, having tried nearly every brand of chocolate milk while driving from Connecticut to Vermont and Cape Cod and back, I did not like the somewhat chalky flavor of what I could find at convenience stores or farm shops.

(Only Monument Dairy’s milk that is available in Addison County, Vermont, even came close.)

So instead of driving four hours to Vermont, when craving that taste, I would instead buy regular milk and add my own Hershey’s syrup.

After the recent interview for a story about Mountain Dairy (see Moo Dog Press for the resulting farm profile story), my colleague brought along two small milk bottles of the farm’s chocolate milk – which became part of my lunch that weekend.

Mountain Dairy’s has the rich smooth taste I love, right out of the bottle. That’s the flavor I remember from my childhood, when my own small carton of chocolate milk with a straw was a treat.

Don’t believe me? Do a taste test of your own – get a bottle of Mountain Dairy’s chocolate milk and try a gulp. To find out who carries it in your area, visit www.mountaindairy.com.

While near University of Connecticut at Storrs, stop by Mansfield General Store on Route 195. The store carries Mountain Dairy products and offers up great sandwiches and fresh-baked cookies, along with the charm of a general store (and an antique-y shed room full of interesting items.)
